Day 41: On to Planai-Schladming

URT Day 41 Planai

Day 41: On the road in Austria again. We have moved on to the last of the quartet of Austrian bike parks on the URT – Planai-Schladming. Only a 40 minute drive over from Wagrain so as I mentioned earlier in the week, a road trip consisting of Planai, Wagrain, Saalbach and Leogang would be easily achievable. And it’s all close to Salzburg airport so those further away could jet in pretty easily and do the rounds in a hire car.

Anyway, Planai-Schladming… A bigger place than the last few, and it actually has a ‘small town’ feel about it. Apartment accommodation here, which is often the easiest if you are a group of bikers – space for filthy kit is easier to find! The Kocina Apartments are centrally located, a 2 minute pedal to the lift station, and offer options for different groups and budgets. The last major race event was the UCI Downhill World Cup in 2009. It is often referred to as “Hill’s Hill” due to Sam Hill’s total domination on the UCI circuit – 4 times victorious on the Schladming DH World Cup course. In addition to the downhill tracks a new trail has gone in this year called “Flowline”, and there are dedicated biker-cross, dirt-jump and pump-track areas to explore. An early start I think…

Nothing else interesting today and no riding which sucks. So here is a Rider-Cam video from Saalbach last week, Sasch heading down the Pro Line Trail. Check out the Evil Eye road gap at 00:55…
