Northstar California Resort

Northstar California Resort /
United States

Introduction

Close to the shores of Lake Tahoe in California (or Nevada, depending on which direction you come at it from), Northstar California Resort Bike Park in the Californian High Sierras offers downhill and cross country lift-accessed bike trails for beginners, advanced riders and everyone else in-between.

In general, the terrain is gnarly, steep and very very loose. Be warned, it is usually super dry and very dusty with silt bomb holes between the rocks that lie in wait to gobble up your front tire and send you over the bars. Mastering the two wheel drift will get you a long way here. The Northstar signature trail is LiveWire, an advanced flow/jump trail. And the newly redesigned Gypsy trail is worth riding over and over! The Northstar trail crew has done a fantastic job integrating wooden features and some incredible rock-work. There’s also a section offering three different line options depending on your level of skill and willingness to accept some risk. Boondocks is another stand-out trail (double-black diamond) on the mountain with a great combination of natural and manmade terrain. With giant boulder drops, steep rock rolls, berms, and jumps, Boondocks is a not to be missed trail. We're convinced that the Northstar trail crew are former brick/stone masons judging by their amazing rock-work.

Trail Breakdown:

  • 11 - Multi-use (XC Bike & Hike)
  • 8 - Beginner (less difficult)
  • 9 - Intermediate (more difficult)
  • 12 - Advanced (most difficult)
  • 4 - Expert Only

Northstar itself has a lively village scene, particularly on the weekends. There’s a bike shop on site with all the usual bike services, and rentals are available if you lost your own bike! Plenty of places to eat too, with a pizza joint and sushi bar in the village. And if you have time to explore outside the bike park, then go looking for the infamous “rooster rock”, a 40 foot granite boulder jump into the frigid, crystal clear waters of Lake Tahoe! You’ll find it at Emerald Bay on the south shore.
